Levi Creel Sr.

Levi died in Richmond, VA when he went after his son, Duncan, who was a
minor (17 years old) and had enlisted against his parents' wishes.
Apparently, Duncan was "a little crazy." While in VA, Levi got sick with
Pneumonia and died. Levi did not fight in the Civil war, but most of his
sons did. (Daniel had arthritis and couldn't enlist. George moved to LA
before the war and enlisted with Co. B, 28th Reg., Louisiana Infantry)

John Creel

Private John Creel enlisted Feb. 12, 1863 at Clayton. He was "conscripted and carried to camp of instruction." He left camp on Mar. 10, 1863 and was declared a deserter. He was believed to be a member of the Marine Corps serving in Richomond, Virginia at a later date. Fate Unknown.

CO. K 29th Regt Ala. Inf. enlisted at Clayton 12 Feb. 1863. John later served in the Conf. Marine Corp. he was taken prisnor and sent to Libby prison in NY. There are conflicting reports as to whether or not he survied the war
According Mrs Vanny Gary he died in prison. Daniel and James went and brought his body home and buried him at Creel Cem.

James F. Creel

Sergeant James F. Creel, a teacher and resident of Buford, Alabama enlisted at Clayton on May 10, 1862, age 27. He was wounded in the hand at Cassville May 22, 1864 and again at Ezra Church on July 28th and again on April 12, 1865. His name appears on a list of soldiers in Shelley's Brigade paroled at General Hospital 10, Salisbury, N.C., May 2, 1865. He was probably the last member of the regiment to be wounded.

Occupation: School teacher

Sgt. Co. K 29th Ala. CSA. He became a school teacher after the war. Died in Texas. He has a headstone as a memorial beside his wife's grave in Edison, Ga. at Mars Hill Ch. Cem. He was wounded at Cassville on May 22 1864. again at Ezra Ch. on July 28th and again on April 12, 1865. (Jeanne Creel)

George W. Creel

George moved to Louisiana before the Civil War and enlisted with Co. B, 28th Reg., Louisiana Infantry CSA. He died at home while on furlough. He died from inflamatory rhuematism.


Preston H. Creel

Lieutenant Preston H. Creel, 22-year old son of Levi and Linai Creel of Barbour County, elisted Mar. 10, 1862 at Clayton. On furlough, sick, July 24-Sept. 8, 1862. He was elected Third Lieutenant Sept. 21, 1862 and was in command of the company during the Battle of Ezra Church on July 28, 1864. He was struck by a shell fragment during the battle at Franklin, Tennessee on Nov. 30, 1864 which punctured the lung. He was left at a makeshift hospital at Franklin when the army retreated. He was taken prisoner on Dec. 17 and taken to U.S.A. General Hospital at Nashville and later imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, where he died on May 8, 1865 of pneumonia. He was buried in the prison cemetery south of the camp in grave no, 1944. Grave 72 row 38.

Levi Creel Jr.

Levi Creel, Jr., 19-year old son of Levi and Linai Creel of Barbour County, enlisted Mar. 10, 1862 at Clayton, and was on sick furlough May 16, 1862. He was wounded at Ezra Church, July 28, 1864. Paroled at Greensboro, N.C. May 1, 1865. He lived in Henry County after the war where he died May 7, 1875.

According to records Duncan was a very unstable person all of his life. However, he was able to raise a family and serve in the Army. It is believed that he grew more unstable the older he got.
